Steps for Brick Restoration
Using brick as a building material has proven the test of time. Not only does it give a structure a natural, earth-tone finish, but it also provides tremendous durability, strength, and beauty. Although brick needs less maintenance than structures built from wood, for example, brick will need repair, cleaning, and sealing over time due to exposure to moisture and extreme temperatures. Brick restoration, like cleaning and repairing, can give the brick a brand-new appearance.
Step 1: Wear Safety Gear
At the very least, we recommend wearing safety glasses and a dust mask. It is best to get old dust that has accumulated for 20+ years away from any airways.
Step 2: Prep Repair Areas
Using a hammer and flat chisel, chip away any loose or damaged mortar between the bricks you want to repair. Take your time doing this; you will want to avoid chipping or damaging any of the actual bricks.
Step 3: Apply New Mortar
Mix your masonry mortar using the manufacturer’s instruction guide. Using a brick trowel, insert the mortar into any gaps or empty joints between the bricks and wipe away any excess mortar from the face of the bricks.
Step 4: Contour Mortar
Look at the current style of your mortar and use a contouring tool to shape the new mortar to match. For example, if you have rounded or beveled joints, use a contouring tool with a round profile.
Step 5: Wash the Area
After you apply the new mortar and contour it, let it dry thoroughly. Once the mortar is completely dry, spray the brick with water using a hose.
Step 6: Apply Detergent
Spray brick or masonry detergent onto the brick face. This will help clean staining, efflorescence, residual mortar, and soiling. It is best to use manufacturer cleaners that use a combination of organic and inorganic acids.
Step 7: Scrub the Surface
Using a natural bristle brush, gently work the detergent into the brick. After you scrub the detergent on the desired areas, rinse the area clean using the water hose.
Step 8: Quality Check
Wait for the water to dry and assess if any other areas need to be cleaned. If additional brick restoration is needed, repeat steps 5-7.
